Living Near Zilker Park, Austin, TX

The park caters to a variety of community needs, including outdoor recreation, nature education, and cultural enrichment. Established in 1960, the Austin Nature and Science Center offers nature exhibits, educational programs, and recreational opportunities to the general public, as well as area teachers. The Center also conducts an annual summer camp for children ages four to 14. The Zilker Botanical Garden provides a variety of programs designed to educate the public about green gardening, landscape design, and native plant life. The ornamental gardens, including the rose garden, cactus garden, and butterfly trail, are popular local attractions, but the Taniguchi Japanese Garden is the jewel of the park.

Lying on the south end of the park, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum features a collection of the works of Charles Umlauf, as well as other contemporary sculptors. The museum also offers a fine arts educational series for adults, as well as programming designed specifically for children. Local artists provide public demonstrations of their craft at special events designed to make the creative process more accessible to the public.

The park also celebrates the performing arts. The annual Austin City Limits Music Festival is held every year on a 46-acre tract of green space.  The Zilker Hillside Theater provides a venue for a variety of ongoing programs, most offered free to the public. The highlight of the theater’s calendar is the annual summer musical, which has been performed consistently since 1959. Beginning as an amateur production for local high school students, the annual musical is now a professionally-produced Broadway-style extravaganza.

For families, the park offers ample outdoor space, including picnic areas, a multi-age playscape, and two multi-use fields. The Zilker Zephyr miniature train provides easy transportation between the park’s attractions and is hugely popular with kids. During the Holiday Season, the Zephyr is decked out to resemble Santa’s train at the North Pole to accompany the display of the Zilker Holiday Tree.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Zilker Park provides ample opportunity to play and explore. The park is renowned for its hike and bike trails, which are well-maintained and shady, making outdoor recreation possible even in the worst summer months. Barton Springs Pool, which enjoys a worldwide reputation, is probably the park’s most famous attraction. Fed by a natural spring, the pool maintains an average temperature of 68 degrees year round. Finally, the park offers sand volleyball courts and a nine-hole disk-golf course.

Although admission to the park is free, events can give rise to the impossition of occassional parking fees.  The various attractions can also charge minimal entry fees.
